Munchaba Underground III
July 23, 2005
Munchaba Lounge
Levittown, New York

Promoter Vinny DiMarco organized his third show in a hopefully
long stretch of his Munchaba Underground series featuring some of
Long Island’s finest original music. This time around, the
theme was rock/metal and the outstanding acts of the night were
Deep Rising, Cast in Shadows, Borgo Pass, Remains of the Fallen
and Seven27.
The
first to take center stage was 2004 Long Island Music Festival finalists,
Deep Rising, featuring vocalist/keyboardist Nick Kerzner, guitarist
Glen Burgos, bassist Mark Smith and drummer Peter Smith. Unfortunately,
sometimes the downfall of being the first act on a Saturday night
on Long Island sometimes means you don’t play to a very large
crowd but it certainly was no reflection on the bands talent and
for those who weren’t there, it was their loss. They began
their set with the title track of their latest CD release, “Shards”,
a song which shows off the Peter Gabrielesque sound of Kerzner’s
voice. “Nowhere” presented the audience with an opportunity
to experience the band’s skills in dynamics, as it see sawed
between a ballad feel to an aggressive pull. “Would you even
listen” showcased guitarist Burgos exclusive and uncommon
guitar work. For more information, please visit:

Cast
in Shadows took the stage next. The band is fronted by vocalist
Vinnie Verzino with a rhythm section consisting of guitarists Brian
Branch and Kevin Corey, bassist Anthony Olivieri and drummer Shaun
Seifert. The band differs from most in the hardcore genre in that
it is melodic metal due mostly to schooled vocalist Verzino. Though
the rhythm section follows the norm expected to be associated with
the hardcore/ metalcore scene, the singing does not embody the gruffness
usually linked with this particular style. Promoting their newly
released CD, “All or Nothing”, some of the tunes included,
“Head Trip”, “Hideaway” and “The Bed
was Made” all of which have strong, resolute guitar riffs
and melodies wrapped in exceptional vocals. For more information,

“Who
does a motherfucker have to blow to get a beer around here?”That
was Borgo Pass’ lead vocalist James Tamarazzo’s first
statement over the mic. Being a true advocate of linguistic crudeness,
this immediately grabbed my attention as the band embodied the Munchaba
Lounge stage. The very tireless and forceful rhythm section is comprised
of drummer Joe Wood, YT on bass and guitarists Tom Crane and Paul
Rosado. Also promoting a new CD, “Nervosa”, the band
performed songs from the new release including, “14 Days that
kill me slow”, “Wrong Man” and the title track
which has a driving “Whipping Post” undercurrent. One
of the most compelling songs of the set was “Rid Myself of
you”, a clear-cut expression of the familiar bitterness everyone
has felt after a failed relationship as Tamarazzo sings of “Living
inside the ugly self and burning pictures of the past”. The
band is currently unsigned, touring and is participating in a 500
station radio promotion publicity push for their new CD. For more
information, please visit, www.borgopass.com.
Remains
of the Fallen kept the high intensity of the evening going. This
band’s members are Frank Amico on drums, guitarists Mike Errico
and Mike Nicoletti, bassist Jeremy Jacobs and vocalist John Mooney.
The diversity of musical tastes and backgrounds vary from rock,
blues, punk and the obligatory metal and is evident in their music.
Turbulent drums and bass combined with unexampled leads and melodies,
Remains of the Fallen kept the ever expanding audience captivated
as they treated them to “Grace”, “1350”,
“My Turn” and “Unjust”. They are currently
recording a CD and for more information, please visit: www.rotfmusic.com.
Closing
the evening was Seven 27, a quartet featuring guitar/keyboardist
Vic Gaetan, drummer Mike Superty, bassist Mike D’Amelia and
vocalist Jay Martino. Both engaging and enamoring, Martino interacted
with the audience/fans as he sang songs including “Seven Ways
to Die”, “Spit” and “There’s a Place”.
Guitarist Gaetan displayed his aptness for a mixed bag feel of guitar
playing as he effectively crossed from clean Fender sounds to crunch.

If you didn’t make it out this time, please try and make
the effort for upcoming original music showcases, because, just
think of the worst case scenario - if you don’t, there might
actually be an Ashlee Simpson Tribute band in your future. And that
is truly an ugly thing. Remember, only you can prevent shitty music
from being heard in local venues.
Thank you Vinny DiMarco and Munchaba for these soirees. Keep up
the good work!

LIMSN Events
at Old Westbury Gardens
and Pisces Cafe
by Stu Lefebvre
Kathy Fleischmann was the LIMSN featured artists at the Old Westbury
Gardens Family Day.
It
was a pleasant and somewhat breezy Friday afternoon at old Westbury
Gardens. Many families were already gathered on the south lawn near
the greenhouses for picnic style fun and great live music. Kathy
played some of her finest originals; her voice and guitar seamlessly
floated along with the breeze. Kathy also added some covers to her
set and some folks were singing along. Be it George Harrison or
Joni Mitchell, Kathy’s ability to interpret other writer’s
material and make it her own is a trademark of her outstanding musicianship.
Her cover of Gillian Welch’s “Orphan Girl” was
a real standout in her set. Be sure and see Kathy one of her upcoming
shows. You can learn more about Kathy at www.kathyfleischmann.com
On
Friday July 29th at the Pisces Cafe in Babylon there was supposed
to be a showing of “Return of the King”, an independent
film by Lindenhurst native Joe Sikorsky.
Unfortunately it was cancelled, so much like the music form itself
the John Anderson Trio made an impromptu performance of improvisational
jazz instead. The band settled into the comfy chairs of Pisces and
proceeded to blow the doors off the place with a blend of originals
and covers that they made all their own. You can catch John Anderson
sitting in on the new Crispy Chicken Jam Thursday nights at Mr.
Beerys in Bethpage.
Next issue we’ll have full coverage of the LIMSN BBQ that
went down on August 28th. Check the web site at www.limsn.org
for their fall indoor event schedule and other LIMSN news!
